MID-CENTURY FOR THIS CENTURY

FURNISHINGS | PALM SPRINGS, CA

It’s easy to reduce the ‘Palm Springs look’ down to a formula— a space-age frontier of turquoise and orange. While that makes for an fun vacation, when visitors become residents, nuance helps. In this home, we referenced iconic period profiles, but recast them in contemporary ways: the classic lounger and ottoman is rendered in glazed black Italian leather; the rosewood and walnut dining suite becomes white oak and pale cording.

MID-CENTURY FOR THIS CENTURY

FURNISHINGS | PALM SPRINGS, CA

When you’re dealing with a history as visually rich and graphically strong as mid-century Palm Springs, its easy to reduce that mix down to a formula— a space-age world of turquoise and orange. It’s exotic and fun for a vacation, but as visitors become residents, nuance helps.

We wanted to reference the profiles the period is known for, but recast them in contemporary ways: the classic lounger with ottoman is rendered in glazed black Italian leather; the rosewood and walnut dining suite becomes white oak and pale cording.

We also wanted to take cue from Modernism Week; the town’s yearly celebration of all things mid-century. Because so may of our famous architects were producing great work into the 70’s, the definition of 'mid century’ has become more inclusive— our take on that was to add a number of vintage 70’s pieces— coffee tables and nightstands— into our mix.
