A Los Angeles couple asked us to renovate their newly-purchased Alexander— this one was the original model home for the iconic Racquet Club Estates. They initially wanted a playful, stress-free weekend getaway— but after moving in, decided to make it a permanent vacation, and now live there full-time.
The clients—both creatives—had some solid ideas about color. With only 1250 sq feet, it was important to create consistency while still allowing for nuance and surprise. Consistency came with continuous flooring (even into the showers) and wall color. Shifting the weights and tones of their green/gold palette provided the surprise.
Walls become valuable real estate in the Alexander’s compact footprint. Rather than frame art, we ‘scaled up’ with murals, cork and tile to bring these spaces to life.
Opening the back of the house with a long run of stacking sliders, as Nichols did, allowed us to realize the indoor/outdoor lifestyle that Palm Springs promises. We love that the clients can host dinner for 12 by using the adjacent dining areas.
The kitchen was completely rethought with only a nod to the 60’s original. Locating appliances along one wall, designing hardware-free cabinets, and continuing the taller-than-typical backsplash in the same counter material provides a streamlined view from the living and dining areas.
